Breaking: Another Top Veteran Houston Astros Superstar Rejects Deal And Sign With Rivals

Alex Bregman has secured a major contract, signing a three-year, $120 million deal with the Boston Red Sox. This move marks the end of his tenure with the Houston Astros and solidifies his place as one of the most significant signings of the MLB offseason.

Despite a fast-moving offseason that saw stars like Juan Soto and Max Fried sign early, Bregman remained one of the biggest names available. On Wednesday night, his wait ended as the Red Sox made a strong push to bring him to Boston. According to ESPN, his contract includes deferred money, with his $40 million annual salary surpassing other teams’ offers by more than $10 million per year.

With Rafael Devers already holding down third base for Boston, Bregman is expected to transition to second base. Though he has played limited innings at the position in his career, Red Sox manager Alex Cora—who previously coached Bregman in Houston—believes he has the potential to be a Gold Glove-caliber defender. The Red Sox made this significant investment despite having top prospect Kristian Campbell in their system, underscoring their confidence in Bregman’s impact.

Bregman leaves Houston as a franchise legend, having helped lead the Astros to two World Series titles. During his time there, he earned two All-Star selections, a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger, and was named the All-Star Game MVP. He finished his Astros career with 1,132 hits, 191 home runs, 663 RBIs, 42 stolen bases, and a .272 batting average.

Fenway Park has been a particularly favorable venue for Bregman, as he boasts a .490 on-base percentage there—the second-highest in the ballpark’s history, trailing only Red Sox icon Ted Williams (.495). Now, he will call Fenway home for at least the next three seasons.

This signing is a full-circle moment for Bregman, whom the Red Sox originally drafted in the 29th round of the 2012 MLB Draft before he opted to attend LSU. Now, more than a decade later, he joins Boston with the goal of leading the team out of its rebuilding phase and back into playoff contention.
