The Atlanta Falcons have signed tight end Nikola Kalinic to a reserve/futures contract, adding depth to their roster ahead of the 2025 season. The move reflects Atlanta’s commitment to evaluating talent and strengthening their tight end position for the future.
Kalinic, a 6-foot-4, 245-pound tight end, originally made a name for himself in the Canadian Football League (CFL) before making the jump to the NFL. He was drafted by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the second round of the 2019 CFL Draft and played two seasons with the team. His versatility as both a pass catcher and blocker made him a valuable asset in the CFL, where he contributed primarily as a hybrid tight end and fullback.
After his time in Canada, Kalinic signed with the Indianapolis Colts in 2022. He spent time on their practice squad before making his way onto the active roster. He appeared in seven games for the Colts during the 2022 season, primarily contributing on special teams and as a depth tight end. However, he did not record any receptions during his time with Indianapolis.
Following his stint with the Colts, Kalinic joined the Los Angeles Rams in 2023. He spent the majority of the season on their practice squad and was later signed to a reserve/futures contract at the end of the year. However, he did not secure a long-term role with the team, making him available for another opportunity in 2024.
With the Falcons signing Kalinic to a futures contract, they are giving him a chance to compete for a roster spot in the offseason. Futures contracts are typically given to players who are not currently on an active NFL roster, allowing them to participate in offseason programs and training camp. The Falcons are likely intrigued by Kalinic’s physicality, blocking ability, and experience in different offensive systems.
Atlanta’s tight end room is currently led by star Kyle Pitts, who remains the team’s primary receiving threat at the position. Behind him, the Falcons have a mix of young and veteran talent, including Jonnu Smith. Adding Kalinic provides additional depth, particularly in situations where blocking tight ends are needed.
As the Falcons prepare for the 2025 season, Kalinic will have an opportunity to prove himself in training camp and the preseason. His path to making the final roster will likely depend on his ability to contribute on special teams and showcase his blocking skills. If he can carve out a niche role, he could find himself sticking around as a valuable depth piece for Atlanta.
