The Houston Astros have agreed to terms with veteran outfielder Ben Gamel, adding depth to their roster ahead of the 2025 season. The move bolsters the team’s outfield options as they continue to prepare for another competitive season in the American League.
Gamel, a left-handed hitting right fielder, brings versatility and experience to the Astros. Over his Major League career, he has played for several teams, including the Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Tampa Bay Rays. Known for his strong defensive abilities and solid on-base skills, Gamel provides Houston with a reliable depth piece who can contribute both in the field and at the plate.
The 31-year-old last appeared in the majors during the 2023 season with the Rays, where he saw limited action. However, he has proven in the past to be a serviceable outfielder with the ability to handle multiple positions. His best seasons came with the Mariners from 2017 to 2018, when he posted a combined .274 batting average and played in over 130 games each year.
While Gamel is not expected to be an everyday starter for Houston, he provides insurance for the outfield, particularly with the uncertainties surrounding the team’s current depth chart. The Astros have Kyle Tucker as their primary right fielder, but injuries or roster adjustments could create opportunities for Gamel to step in. Additionally, his ability to play both corner outfield spots makes him a flexible option off the bench.
Houston’s offseason has been relatively quiet in terms of major signings, but adding a veteran like Gamel aligns with their strategy of maintaining depth while keeping their payroll manageable. As the team looks to contend for another deep playoff run, having reliable role players will be crucial to navigating the long season.
Gamel will likely compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster during spring training, where his performance will determine his role with the club. If he can provide consistent at-bats and solid defense, he could find himself as a valuable piece of Houston’s roster throughout the season.
