Miami Dolphins Hire Craig Aukerman as Special Teams Coordinator
The Miami Dolphins have addressed a critical coaching vacancy by naming Craig Aukerman as their new special teams coordinator under head coach Mike McDaniel. The hire aims to revitalize a special teams unit that struggled during the 2023 season.
The search for a coordinator became a priority after McDaniel decided to part ways with Danny Crossman, whose unit’s inconsistent performance contributed to the team’s disappointing season. While kicker Jason Sanders remained a reliable asset, other areas, such as the return game and punting, left room for significant improvement.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Aukerman, 48, is set to join the Dolphins. Aukerman last worked in the NFL in 2023 as the special teams coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, a position he held for six seasons under head coach Mike Vrabel.
However, his tenure with the Titans ended after a Week 13 overtime loss to the Indianapolis Colts, during which his unit turned the ball over twice. Following that game, Vrabel decided to make a change and relieved Aukerman of his duties.
Aukerman brings extensive experience to Miami. Before his stint in Tennessee, he served as the special teams coordinator for the San Diego Chargers in 2016 and as an assistant special teams coach for the Titans (2013-2015) and Jacksonville Jaguars (2011-2012). He also worked as a defensive assistant with the Denver Broncos in 2010.
His task in Miami will be to address the unit’s weaknesses, including improving the return game and evaluating the punter position. While upgrades are needed, consistency at certain positions, such as kicker, remains a positive for the Dolphins.
This hiring comes shortly after Miami added former Dallas Cowboys wide receivers coach Robert Prince to its coaching staff, filling another key vacancy. The team is taking steps to strengthen its coaching ranks after last season’s shortcomings.
Although Aukerman’s hiring carries some risk given his recent dismissal, there is optimism that his experience and fresh approach can help turn around Miami’s special teams. For now, fans remain cautiously optimistic about what this offseason could bring.
