Packers Quarterback Alex McGough Signs with UFL’s Birmingham Stallions
Alex McGough, a former Green Bay Packers quarterback and receiver, is returning to the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL. James Larsen of UFL Newsroom reported on Thursday that McGough, who ended the 2024 season on the Packers’ practice squad, has opted to re-sign with the Stallions instead of pursuing a reserve/futures contract with Green Bay.
McGough originally joined the Packers in 2023 after an outstanding MVP season in the USFL with the Stallions. That year, he delivered a stellar performance, achieving a 108.3 passer rating, averaging 7.9 yards per pass attempt, and boasting a 20:3 touchdown-to-interception ratio. In addition to his passing stats, McGough was a dual threat, rushing for 403 yards and five touchdowns, which helped lead Birmingham to a league championship.
In Green Bay, McGough served as a versatile reserve player, taking snaps at quarterback, receiver, and tight end during practices. Ahead of the 2024 season, he transitioned officially to the receiver position but remained a depth option for the Packers. Despite his adaptability, McGough did not secure a long-term spot with the team, prompting his decision to return to the UFL.
With McGough’s departure, the Packers will enter the 2025 season with three quarterbacks: Jordan Love, Malik Willis, and Sean Clifford. Meanwhile, McGough is set to return to the Stallions, where he has an opportunity to reclaim a starting role. The team’s previous starter, Adrian Martinez, has moved on to the New York Jets, creating an opening. However, McGough will face competition from Matt Corral, a former top-100 NFL draft pick who has also re-signed with Birmingham. Corral started three games for the Stallions last season and played a key role during the postseason.
The UFL’s 2025 season kicks off on March 28, with McGough’s first game for the Stallions scheduled for March 30 at 3:00 PM ET on ESPN. Fans of McGough and the Stallions are eager to see how the former USFL MVP performs in his return to the league.
