Yankees Claim RHP Off Waivers from Braves
The New York Yankees have added right-handed pitcher Allan Winans to their roster after claiming him off waivers from the Atlanta Braves, the team announced on Thursday.
Winans, 29, appeared in two games for the Braves during the 2024 season, starting both outings. However, his performances were challenging, as he posted an 0-2 record with a 15.26 ERA over 7.2 innings, allowing 14 hits, 14 runs (13 earned), three home runs, and four walks while striking out four batters.
Most of Winans’ 2024 season was spent with Triple-A Gwinnett, where he demonstrated strong form. In 24 games (16 starts), he recorded a 7-5 record with a 3.30 ERA across 114.2 innings, allowing 42 earned runs, 103 hits, and 31 walks while striking out 100 batters. Notably, he was honored as the International League’s “Pitcher of the Month” in June, thanks to a dominant stretch in which he posted a 1.16 ERA with 36 strikeouts over 31 innings in five starts. Among Braves minor leaguers in 2024, Winans ranked tied for fourth in wins, fifth in innings pitched, and ninth in strikeouts.
Despite his success in the minors, Winans was designated for assignment by Atlanta on January 17, 2025, clearing the way for the Yankees to acquire him.
In parts of two MLB seasons with the Braves (2023-2024), Winans compiled a 1-4 record and a 7.20 ERA over 40 innings in eight starts. His minor league career, spanning six seasons with the Mets (2018-2019, 2021) and Braves (2022-2024), has been more productive. Over 128 games (45 starts), he holds a 20-21 record with a 2.95 ERA, 15 saves, and 378 strikeouts in 414.1 innings.
A native of Bakersfield, California, Winans was originally selected by the New York Mets in the 17th round of the 2018 MLB Draft out of Campbell University in North Carolina. He later joined the Braves organization via the 2021 Rule 5 Draft and now looks forward to a new chapter in New York.
