Green Bay Packers Fans Urge Team to Hire Former Backup QB
Green Bay Packers fans are calling for the team to bring back a familiar face to fill their vacant quarterbacks coach position: former backup quarterback Scott Tolzien. The vacancy arose after Tom Clements, who came out of retirement in 2022 to assist Aaron Rodgers and mentor Jordan Love, announced he is retiring once again.
Clements, a legendary NFL quarterbacks coach, holds the distinction of having worked with three Packers franchise quarterbacks: Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Jordan Love. His guidance was crucial in helping Rodgers during the 2022 season and aiding Love’s development as the team’s next leader.
With Clements stepping away, speculation is swirling about who will take over the vital coaching role. Head coach Matt LaFleur recently rehired former Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy as a defensive assistant following his dismissal as the Las Vegas Raiders’ offensive coordinator. Reports suggest Getsy may remain with the team in 2025, but it’s unclear if he will assume the role of quarterbacks coach.
Despite the internal options, Packers fans are eyeing Scott Tolzien as a compelling candidate. Tolzien, a former Wisconsin Badgers quarterback, served as a backup for the Packers from 2013 to 2015. After retiring from playing, Tolzien began his coaching career in 2019 as an analyst for the Wisconsin Badgers. He later joined Mike McCarthy’s staff with the Dallas Cowboys, where he rose to quarterbacks coach in 2023.
With McCarthy no longer coaching the Cowboys and Brian Schottenheimer taking over, Tolzien is currently a free agent in the coaching world. This availability has sparked enthusiasm among Packers fans, who hope to see him return to Green Bay.
While the Packers’ coaching decisions for the upcoming season remain uncertain, the team faces additional staffing needs, including hiring a defensive line coach. Tolzien’s return would not only bring continuity and familiarity but also reinforce the team’s commitment to developing young talent like Jordan Love.
The decision will undoubtedly shape the Packers’ trajectory, and fans eagerly await news on who will guide their quarterbacks next season.
