Official Hokies News: Just In Virginia Tech football Officially Hires New Coach

Virginia Tech has appointed former Hokies fullback Jarrett Ferguson as the new strength and conditioning coach. The announcement, made on Tuesday, marks the promotion of a familiar and respected figure within the program.

Ferguson, a native of Goodview, Virginia, played high school football at Staunton River before enjoying a standout collegiate career under legendary coach Frank Beamer. From 1998 to 2001, Ferguson was a key contributor as a fullback, participating in four bowl games and starting for the 1999 team that competed in the national championship game. His performance earned him a selection in the seventh round of the 2002 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills.

After his playing career, Ferguson returned to Virginia Tech, joining the strength and conditioning staff under renowned coach Mike Gentry, a USA Strength and Conditioning Coaches Hall of Fame inductee. Ferguson spent 13 years working under Gentry before leaving the program in 2018. He later returned in 2022 as the assistant director of strength and conditioning.

 

Mike Gentry praised Ferguson’s character and dedication in a statement shared by Hokie Sports: “Jarrett Ferguson represents the best of Virginia Tech Athletics. He was one of the premier players on championship football teams and achieved his success the old-fashioned way. He earned it. Jarrett is a man of honor and character who understands the value of unselfish hard work. Virginia Tech got stronger today.”
