Raiders Likely to Cut , Saving $6.3 Million in Cap Space
Gardner Minshew’s tenure as the Las Vegas Raiders’ starting quarterback may be short-lived. After being named the Week 1 starter, Minshew underperformed, going 2-7 and throwing nine touchdowns against 10 interceptions before an injury ended his season. While he has excelled in backup roles in the past, his struggles make it unlikely he’ll remain the starter next season.
According to Bleacher Report, Minshew is the top candidate to be cut by the Raiders, as releasing him would save $6.3 million in salary cap space. The Raiders’ recent firing of general manager Tom Telesco leaves the team’s future direction uncertain, but a new leadership team is expected to prioritize a fresh start at quarterback.
“Minshew’s 38.3 QBR and turnover issues indicate the Raiders are likely to explore other options through the draft or free agency,” the report stated.
Could the New Regime Retain Minshew?
Despite his poor 2024 season, Minshew has proven his value as a reliable backup in past years. With no clear starter for the 2025 season, the new general manager and head coach may decide to keep him in a supporting role.
Raiders’ Quarterback Options for 2025
Regardless of Minshew’s fate, the Raiders face significant decisions at quarterback. Aidan O’Connell has shown potential but has limited upside at 26 years old. The draft appears to be the most promising route, but it’s uncertain if a top prospect will be available when the Raiders pick at No. 6.
The free agent market doesn’t offer strong solutions, with players like Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, and Justin Fields carrying their own risks.
The Raiders may choose to focus on rebuilding the roster in 2025, setting the stage for a stronger quarterback class in 2026. This approach could allow a future signal-caller to succeed in a more stable environment.
