Former Mets Pitcher  Signs Minor League Deal with Giants

Joey Lucchesi, a former New York Mets starting pitcher, has signed a minor league deal with the San Francisco Giants, complete with an invitation to spring training. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, Lucchesi could earn up to $1.5 million if he makes the Giants’ major league roster this season.

Lucchesi, 31, was originally traded to the Mets from the San Diego Padres on January 19, 2021, as part of a three-team trade that sent All-Star pitcher Joe Musgrove to San Diego. His time with the Mets, however, was marked by inconsistency and injuries.

In his first season with New York in 2021, Lucchesi posted a 1-4 record with a 4.46 ERA in 11 games (eight starts). His season ended in June due to a significant elbow injury that required Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for all of 2022.

Returning to the Mets in 2023, Lucchesi began the season in the minors before making his first major league start in nearly two years on April 21. In a standout performance against his now-current team, the Giants, Lucchesi threw seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out nine in a 7-0 Mets victory. He went on to make eight more starts that year, finishing 4-0 with a 2.89 ERA over 46.2 innings.

In 2024, Lucchesi’s struggles resurfaced. After starting the year in the minors, he was recalled for a May 15 outing against the Philadelphia Phillies, where he allowed five runs in 4.1 innings. Following a midseason roster move, Lucchesi was designated for assignment but remained in the minors after clearing waivers. His final Mets appearance came on September 30, where he allowed just one earned run over six innings but took a loss against the Atlanta Braves.

Now a free agent, Lucchesi returns to the NL West, where he began his career with the Padres, aiming to revive his MLB journey with the Giants.
