Gonzalez Signs with Houston Astros
SAN MARCOS, Texas – Former Texas State standout Jose Gonzalez has signed a minor league contract with the Houston Astros. The deal was finalized earlier this month, marking an exciting new chapter in Gonzalez’s baseball career.
“I’m thrilled for Jose to get this opportunity,” said Texas State baseball head coach Steven Trout. “He had an incredible career here and followed it up with impressive numbers in professional baseball. He’s a fan favorite among Bobcat supporters, and I know they’ll continue to follow his journey with the Astros.”
This past season, Gonzalez showcased his talent with the Yuba-Sutter High Wheelers in the Pioneer League. Over 88 games, the outfielder led his team in home runs (19), RBIs (84), and OPS (1.113), solidifying his reputation as a powerful offensive player.
During his three years at Texas State, Gonzalez made a significant impact, hitting 33 home runs—the second-most in program history. He also batted .290, recording 173 hits, 40 doubles, 145 RBIs, and 109 runs scored. A Spring, Texas native, Gonzalez drew 109 walks, posted a .408 on-base percentage, and stole 21 bases during his collegiate career.
Gonzalez was a key contributor to Texas State’s historic 2022 season, when the team set a program record with 47 wins, secured the Sun Belt Conference regular-season title, and reached the Stanford Regional championship game. That year, he earned second-team all-conference honors and a spot on the Stanford All-Region Team after hitting three home runs against host Stanford.
In February, Gonzalez is set to report to the Astros’ spring training facility in West Palm Beach, Florida.
He joins three other members of the 2022 Texas State team—Dalton Shuffield (Minnesota Twins), Tristan Stivors (Chicago White Sox), and Levi Wells (Baltimore Orioles)—in pursuing professional careers in Major League Baseball organizations.
