Yankees Still in Play for $27 Million Infielder Despite Reds’ Acquisition of Gavin Lux
On Monday night, ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers are trading infielder Gavin Lux to the Cincinnati Reds. In exchange, the Dodgers will receive outfield prospect Mike Sirota and a competitive balance draft pick. Lux is set to join a Reds team led by Elly De La Cruz and manager Terry Francona as they aim to contend for the National League Central title.
However, Lux’s stay in Cincinnati might be short-lived. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden echoed Passan’s report but added an intriguing twist, suggesting that Lux could be traded again—potentially to the New York Yankees. In a Twitter/X post, Bowden wrote, “There is a chance that Lux gets spun to the Yankees, so stay tuned.” He later clarified that the Reds currently have no plans to move Lux.
The Yankees had been viewed as strong contenders for Lux before the Dodgers-Reds deal. Adding Lux would address a clear need for New York while fitting within their budget, which is a critical consideration after a costly offseason.
For the Reds to trade Lux now, they would likely demand major-league-ready talent in return. With Francona at the helm, Cincinnati is in win-now mode, and their recent moves—including acquiring Lux—reflect their focus on immediate success.
One potential trade scenario involves the Yankees offering outfield prospect Everson Pereira to the Reds for Lux. While Pereira could help fill a significant gap in Cincinnati’s roster, he is far less established than Lux, making such a deal uncertain.
As things stand, Lux is headed to Cincinnati, and the Yankees will need to explore other options to strengthen their infield. For now, the possibility of Lux wearing pinstripes remains speculative, but it’s a situation worth monitoring as the offseason progresses.
