Tyler Johnson, a seasoned forward, finally agreed to a one-year deal with the Boston Bruins on Monday for the 2024–25 campaign after weeks of waiting. After being patient and waiting for a roster position to open since the completion of training camp and the preseason, the 34-year-old, who was on a professional trial (PTO) arrangement with Boston, signed a deal for $775,000.
According to the Boston Globe, Johnson remarked, “It wasn’t the most fun experience,” regarding his waiting period while on paid time off. It’s difficult for me to watch hockey for that long and not participate because I detest it.
It’s good to be back, then. Johnson played 14 minutes, including over three minutes on the power play, in Boston’s 4-0 loss to its divisional rivals on Tuesday against the Toronto Maple Leafs, marking his Bruins debut.
Johnson brings a wealth of experience to the Bruins, having scored 431 points and 193 goals in 738 regular-season games before Tuesday’s game.
Above all, he has two Stanley Cup titles during his tenure with the Tampa Bay Lightning, having taken home the trophy in 2020 and 2021. Johnson told reporters that he remained focused during his three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks, who were rebuilding, with the goal of joining a team that had a chance to make the playoffs. Johnson stated, “That was the biggest thing for me,” in reference to his choice to join Boston.
“And the Boston organization is just top-notch… ever since that first day I got here, I knew I wanted to be here.” Johnson, according to head coach Jim Montgomery, gives Boston’s squad more than simply offensive depth. “Energy, poise, wisdom, and just game management,” said Montgomery. He’s going to perform. On the bench, he will be able to assist us. Just another seasoned voice with a few Cups to his name.
