Following their Week 9 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, the Las Vegas Raiders dismissed offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. With the firing of offensive line coach James Cregg and quarterbacks coach Rich Scangarello, the team has also made the decision to fire additional offensive coaching staff members. Antonio Pierce, the head coach of the Raiders, declared that the choice was “100% his.”
Who is the Raiders’ new offensive coordinator?
Pierce informed reporters Monday morning that he has not yet selected a starting quarterback or chosen who will assume offensive play-calling responsibilities. Given his background as the Washington Commander’s play-caller from 2021 to 2022, Scott Turner appears to be the most sensible pick for passing game coordinator.
This following weekend is the Raiders’ bye, and they have two weeks until their next game.
Luke Getsy, the Raiders’ offensive coordinator, was fired; why?
With the Raiders’ bye week approaching this week, Vic Tafur of The Athletic stated that Getsy may be dismissed following the game, thus this move isn’t entirely shocking. Last week, there were also increasing calls for Getsy’s termination.
Even though Getsy was only hired this summer, Las Vegas’ offense was rated 26th in terms of points per game going into this weekend, so Sunday’s 17-point effort didn’t help the team’s standing. The Raiders scored 24 points against the Bengals, but one of their two touchdowns came in garbage time, and seven of those points came from a pick-six by Jack Jones.
Granted, the offense’s problems extend beyond the caller, as at the conclusion of Sunday’s game, Gardner Minshew was benched once more in favor of Desmond Ridder. Additionally, the team’s offensive line has had a difficult season. But at the midway mark of the season, Pierce had to make a change since things were already getting out of hand.
