As many NFL teams as there are that obviously understand how an organization should be set up and run, there are apparently twice as many that have taken the other approach. The Raiders are one of those teams that simply can’t seem to get it right, much to the chagrin of Black Hole members who live in Oakland, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, and around the nation.
Before I go any further, let me say that I was certain that the Raiders were right to keep Antonio Pierce as their permanent head coach. This half-season sample size hasn’t given me much confidence, so perhaps it would be overreaction for me to go so far as to recant that declaration after only nine games. Furthermore, it seems questionable how Pierce has managed the chaos and adversity inside the company.
Antonio Pierce stated on Monday morning that he was “100 percent” responsible for firing offensive coordinator Luke Getsy following Sunday’s defeat to the Cincinnati Bengals, according to Tashan Reed of The Athletic. Speaking of Getsy, it seems like the right decision to fire him so quickly since, as someone who closely observed Luke Getsy’s play calling during the 2022 or 2023 season, I could have warned you that this hiring was doomed.
However, Antonio Pierce’s handling in the immediate aftermath of that firing is where he has undoubtedly made a mistake. The head coach of the Raiders stated on Monday that he has not yet determined who will call plays going forward or who will start as quarterback. Even though there is a bye week approaching, having unknowns at quarterback and play-caller is a major problem.
The Raiders’ forced trade of a receiver who had consecutive 1,000-yard seasons a few weeks ago doesn’t help either.
A desperate 2024 season is defined by the Raiders’ quarterback instability.
