Brock Bowers, a rookie tight end, has been the Las Vegas Raiders’ only offensive bright light thus far this season. Since the Raiders selected Michael Mayer in the second round of last year’s draft and he shown a lot of promise in the last stretch of the previous season, many people wondered why they selected him.
Despite playing in the season’s first three games, Mayer only managed seven total targets. He has since been absent from the squad for personal reasons, albeit the specifics are still unknown. Though nothing has been verified, there were some rumors that it could have been because of his limited role in the Raiders offense.
Whatever the case, it appears like the Raiders will soon get Mayer back on the field after head coach Antonio Pierce told ESPN’s Paul Gutierrez that he thinks the second-year tight end will make a comeback:
Mayer’s return to the field would help the Raiders offense, which is in desperate need of more pass catchers despite Bowers’ dominance. Although Mayer lacks Bowers’ explosiveness, he is incredibly dependable, sure-handed, and at least can provide the defense with another player to worry about.
It’s unclear exactly why Mayer hasn’t been playing for the Raiders, but his return to the field is a huge plus for the team. The offensive is having trouble. It cannot be avoided. While Mayer’s return won’t solve every issue on that end, it will at least give Gardner Minshew or whoever is starting as quarterback another weapon.
Brock Bowers, the Raiders’ rookie tight end, is creating history.
Brock Bowers has been occupied with leading the Raiders offense and even creating NFL history during Michael Mayer’s absence.
In his first seven games as a rookie tight end, Bowers passed Denver Broncos great Keith Jackson for the most receptions. Bowers leads all tight ends with 52 catches for 535 yards in eight games thus far, but he has only managed one score and has struggled to get into the end zone.
