Although it has had its moments this season, the Auburn Tigers’ defense is ultimately falling short of expectations.
The Tigers are now 107th in the league after forcing six turnovers, four interceptions, and two turnovers this season. With 339.9 yards allowed per game, they rank 46th in the FBS.
Late in the game, Auburn’s defense gave up a 95-yard drive that led to the game-winning score in the team’s 21-17 road defeat to Missouri.
Before joining Auburn through the transfer portal this offseason, veteran safety Jerrin Thompson played four seasons for Texas. He thinks his team could have stopped Missouri from scoring on that drive.
It was a lengthy drive, but given the defense we claim to be, Thompson stated, “we should embrace drives like that.” Our poorest drive of the game was most likely this one. We weren’t urgent enough, and it wasn’t our night. We must act with greater urgency. We simply didn’t want to go on that drive.
It is reasonable to say that Auburn has fallen short of expectations this season, sitting at 2-5 with no conference victories. It is not unusual for teams to disintegrate in the last moments of a poor season like this one.
Thompson has been urging Auburn’s young defensemen who are playing early in their collegiate years to be focused, despite the fact that he won’t be on the team for some seasons.
According to Thompson, “the little things go a long way and they matter.” We participate in these games. All we need to do is find out how to get it done. We have excellent players, a brilliant plan, and excellent coaching. We are the only ones putting ourselves out there and completing the games.
On Saturday, Thompson and the Tigers will travel to play the Kentucky Wildcats in an attempt to record their first SEC victory. The start time is 6:45 p.m. The TV broadcast will be on CT and SEC Network.
