An exchange between Brad Marchand, the captain, and Jim Montgomery, the head coach of the Boston Bruins, has drawn attention and may indicate deeper problems between the two as well as potential implications for their long-term future. NHL expert Elliotte Friedman and host Kyle Bukauskas discussed the incident on a recent edition of the “32 Thoughts Podcast,” raising concerns about whether Montgomery’s heated outburst and physical contact with Marchand may cause problems in the future.
Montgomery openly yelled at Marchand throughout the game, which was one thing. However, if Marchand or the Bruins want to make a bigger deal out of it, Montgomery could have gone too far when he made physical contact with the player, whether aggressively or not.
Friedman observed, “You don’t see coaches yelling at players like that on the bench very often anymore.” Friedman questioned whether there were unsolved issues between the two behind the scenes or whether there was something particular about Marchand’s behavior that caused Montgomery to react so strongly.
But once more, Montgomery and Marchand’s physical interaction was more worrisome. Even though it seemed like a small prod, the fact that it occurred at all was concerning. Friedman clarified that even little physical gestures between a coach and player might cause issues, saying, “In this day and age, there isn’t supposed to be contact.” In agreement, Bukauskas observed, “There is that line that can’t be crossed.”
Montgomery has a reputation for being fiery, especially when he’s angry. This was not the first time he openly criticized a key Bruins player; he had previously criticized David Pastrnak at a pivotal point during the team’s first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs the previous season. This episode may indicate more conflict between coach and captain, as the Bruins are already under pressure to continue winning.
What follows between Montgomery and Marchand?
Marchand may be in a precarious situation as he negotiates a contract with the Bruins. Compared to Jeremy Swayman’s previous extension talks, the negotiations have been rather quiet, but it’s worth considering whether this type of interaction alters the dynamics.
How the Bruins react in the future will be the true test. “It’s one thing to express your disapproval, but adding contact to the equation invites potential issues,” Bukauskas said. Will Marchand treat this as like it didn’t happen? Will he keep this in mind while he’s negotiating? In the future, will he even want to play for Montgomery?
Even if none of this matters, people are still conversing.
It remains to be seen if the consequences will subside or develop into a more significant problem. For the time being, it’s still a scenario to watch as Montgomery and Marchand either move on or this festers.
