After hurting his thumb against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, Aidan O’Connell was placed on injured reserve by the Las Vegas Raiders. They also added tight end Trevon Wesco and former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Terrace Marshall Jr. off their practice squad. Desmond Ridder, a quarterback, was also signed by the Raiders off the Arizona Cardinals practice team.
On the last roster cut-down day of the offseason, the Carolina Panthers released Marshall, a 2021 second-round selection. On October 15, he was released by San Francisco after being temporarily included in the 49ers’ practice squad.
Tre Tucker, DJ Turner, and Jakobi Meyers are the Raiders’ top receivers on the depth chart. In his debut season, Tucker caught 19 receptions for 331 yards and two touchdowns on 34 targets.
Meyers’ ankle issue kept him out of action last week. At 27, Turner is in his third year and has six career catches. Additionally, the Raiders have attempted to increase the involvement of Kristian Wilkerson and Alex Bachman.
In the AFC West divisional rankings, the Raiders sit at the bottom with a record of 2-5. In the NFL, they give up the third-worst number of points (183). Following the trade of wide receiver Davante Adams, trade speculations involving Maxx Crosby are still circulating.
With a roster of largely reserve wide outs and no clear starting quarterback, can Las Vegas actually compete? It also doesn’t auger well for Marshall’s chances with the Raiders, given that the 49ers, who are WR-hungry, moved on from him.
The Raiders have the third-highest cap space in the NFL at $37 million. They could actually make a move for a quarterback or wide receiver if they truly desired that player. But what would be the price of any significant move?
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Raiders’ acquisition of Tom Brady as a team owner may be a bright spot.
