When facing the Las Vegas Raiders, the Pittsburgh Steelers had to settle for playing outside linebacker. Ade Ogundeji and Jeremiah Moon did a good job of filling in the holes, and Moon even added some flair to the rotation with a blocked punt.
But it looks like the Steelers will get their wish against the New York Jets. They could use either Nick Herbig or Alex Highsmith back. PennLive has learned from sources that Pittsburgh anticipates Highsmith’s return this week.
Highsmith logged two sparse practices since beginning to practice last week. Highsmith is scheduled to practice all week long if there are no setbacks, and after missing the previous three games due to a groin ailment, he should participate.
Herbig’s situation is far more uncertain. For the first time since Highsmith’s injury against the Los Angeles Chargers, the Steelers will have their whole defensive line back together as a starting unit with his return.
Moon’s strong showing as a starter against the Raiders suggests that he will most likely play as the third outside linebacker.
