The No. 23-ranked Kansas State Wildcats, led by quarterback Avery Johnson, bounced back from a difficult setback to BYU in Week 4 with an excellent 42-20 victory over Big 12 foe Oklahoma State to improve to 4-1 on the season. Johnson threw one interception and three touchdowns on 19 of 31 passes for 259 yards.
In addition, he had two rushing scores and five carries for 60 yards. Given that he is only 19 years old, his ability to make plays with both his arm and legs makes him a dynamic quarterback who will likely rank among the best in college football for the next year or so. Johnson received recognition on Monday for his outstanding play when the Big 12 league named him the Offensive Player of the Week.
Even though Johnson had a rough game against the Cougars in Week 4, it’s amazing that, as one of the league’s younger starting quarterbacks, he was able to move past it and respond so calmly against the Cowboys. His stats for the season were 321 rushing yards, 136.9 passer rating, 879 passing yards, 11 total touchdowns, and a 61.1 completion %. One of the best young quarterbacks in the nation is on Kansas State, and as the season goes on and he continues to get experience in big-time games, he has the potential to be a real threat.
