In a thrilling 87-81 loss to the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday, Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark gave it her all but was unable to lead her team to victory, ending her 2024 WNBA career.
After an intense season, ESPN’s Ryan Ruocco said that the youngster might be ready for some well-earned basketball rest.
Clark had a stellar performance in her second play-off game, scoring 25 points on 10/23 shooting while playing the entire 40 minutes and dishing out eight assists and six rebounds to help her side win.
As the Sun game was coming to an end, Ruocco revealed that Clark had decided not to play offseason basketball. This means that she will not be joining Angel Reese in the new Unrivaled League that begins in January, nor will she be taking part in any other leagues.
Clark, who was chosen first overall by the Fever on April 16—just nine days after leading the University of Iowa to the NCAA championship game with an incredible tournament run—was coy about her plans for the offseason on Wednesday after the game. She did, however, seem to be moving away from the court.
“I was focused on beating the Connecticut Sun, I haven’t thought too far down the line,” Clark said. “I’m not sure what I’ll do in the morning. I’m going to go play golf. That’s what I’m going to do in Indiana until the weather gets too cold. I’m going to turn pro at golf.”
Promising rookie Reese has committed to the cutting-edge Unrivaled league, which is being formed by stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier and will feature women’s 3v3 basketball starting in January in Miami. With only two seats left, the new league is drawing elite talent with six-figure wages.
Paige Bueckers, a rising star at UConn, is one of the signees, and now all eyes are on Clark as a possible commitment.
“And I knew they were gonna bring on a couple more dogs,” Reese said, expressing her delight at entering the league and asking, “Who wouldn’t want to play with two great players like that?” She also expressed her relief at not having to play overseas. Traveling abroad is something that nobody likes to do. Many of us hope to never need to travel abroad.”
She continued, speaking about the league’s quality and profitability, saying, “Being able to make – what? – six figures.” Just being able to improve and earn six figures in three months here—three-on-three reveals everything. Thus, I’m eager for it.”
“I feel like I didn’t even have time to really reflect on my college career because it ended so fast, then I came here and was trying to give everything I could to this team and kind of move on to put all that behind me and help this team get back to the play-offs,” Clark said in a recent discussion about the hectic pace of her year’s major events, implying the need for introspection.
