Avery Johnson, the quarterback for Kansas State, is an amazing person both on and off the field. The sophomore quarterback took action after finding out that his high school principle had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. His commitment to aiding in the fight against cancer has motivated supporters to donate to a worthy cause, not only Manhattan, Kansas, supporters.
Fans can donate a certain amount to Johnson’s fund for each touchdown he scores this season. Unfortunately, in their surprising loss against BYU this past weekend, Kansas State was never able to get to the end zone.
Despite the disappointing outcome, Johnson’s fund, in spite of his lack of touchdowns, surprisingly met its target of $20,000 after just one game. The cause? Supporters of BYU have risen up and contributed to a worthy cause.
Many Kansas State supporters who traveled to Provo last weekend appear to feel the same way about BYU: it’s a top-notch school with a kind and encouraging fan culture. Despite the Wildcats’ disappointing performance on the field, supporters of both fan groups have seized the chance to make a positive impact off the field.
BYU’s athletic program and university mission have benefited greatly from joining the Big 12, but there is another dimension of camaraderie and solidarity that goes beyond what we see on ESPN thanks to the relationships and friendships among the member universities.
In the raucous atmosphere of LaVell Edwards Stadium, Avery Johnson’s Wildcats fell short of pregame expectations against the Cougars, tossing two interceptions and helping his side to three field goals.
However, even for the stars on the field, there are some things that are more important than football, and for that I may require you to take a seat. Johnson is a dynamic and exceptionally gifted quarterback whose tale of altruism and charity moved onlookers to donate money to a deserving organization.
We appreciate your kindness and generosity, whether you have donated or still want to. It is encouraging to see so many people set aside their own wants in order to focus on the life of someone in need because life’s challenges extend far beyond the boundaries of a football field.
For the remainder of the season, I hope to hear more tales along these lines. I just want to say thank you for now.
UPDATE: The fund has increased its target to $40,000 due to the high volume of donations; all contributions are much appreciated! You can click this link to make a donation to Avery Johnson’s cancer fund.
