On Saturday, the LSU Tigers will host the UCLA Bruins in their Week 4 college football game in Baton Rouge. The opponent is a familiar face. In a special Heisman Trophy ceremony, former star quarterback Jayden Daniels will get recognition, formally giving the university the highest distinction in the sport.
The Heisman Trophy, which is awarded annually to the best college football player in the country, honors both the winner and the university he plays for.
After an exceptional senior season in Death Valley, Daniels was chosen by the Washington Commanders as the second overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. Although his time as a Tiger was brief, his skill set and video game-like stats will live on in the memory for a very long time.
Before moving to LSU, Daniels, a former four-star prospect from San Bernardino, California, attended Arizona State for his first three seasons. In his debut season as a Tiger, he ran for an additional 885 yards and 11 touchdowns in addition to passing for 2,913 yards and 17 touchdowns.
Those stats were merely a prelude to one of the greatest quarterback seasons in college football history. In 2023, Daniels had a completely different appearance. He finished with 3,812 passing yards, 1,134 rushing yards, and 50 touchdowns overall, which helped the Tigers get to the SEC Championship Game.
Daniels became the second player in SEC history to pass for 3,500 yards and rush for 1,000 yards in the same season, after Johnny Manziel. Daniels went on to win the 2023 Heisman Trophy, defeating Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State), Bo Nix (Oregon), and Michael Penix Jr. (Washington).
