Consider future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski a supporter of rookie tight end Brock Bowers of the Las Vegas Raiders.
On Tuesday, Gronkowski remarked, “I feel like he’s on track to be better than myself,” on FanDuel’s “Up & Adams.” “I don’t think he can outmaneuver me in the trenches the way I did. However, in general, I believe he can outperform me in many circumstances as a pass-catching tight end.”
It seems improbable that Bowers will match or eclipse Gronkowski’s career. He was selected four times for the first team All-Pro and won four Super Bowls in his eleven seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England Patriots. 2019 also saw him included on the NFL’s 100th All-Time Anniversary Team.
He had the third-most touchdown catches (92), sixth-most receiving yards (9,286), and tenth-most receptions (621) among all tight ends in NFL history, according to Pro Football Reference’s HOF monitor.
Nonetheless, Bowers’ career is off to a promising start. After two games, the former Georgia standout has 15 receptions for 156 yards. The Raiders PR department claims that he is the only tight end in league history to have at least 15 receptions in just his first two games.
He had nine receptions for 98 yards in Week 2’s surprise victory over the Baltimore Ravens, winning 26–23. Over the past ten seasons, only Bowers and Sam LaPorta of the Detroit Lions have amassed seven or more receptions, eighty yards or more, and all of their targets in a single game, according to The 33rd Team.
“He looks like this guy that’s on the screen with us right now, honestly,” Gronkowski-related remarks made by Raiders wide receiver Davante Adams on “Up & Adams” were noted. “…This young player is on a different level for a rookie, and I think Baltimore got a chance to feel that a little bit.”
When the Raiders selected Bowers with the 13th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, it appeared puzzling. Former Notre Dame second-round pick Michael Mayer, a tight end in his second year, was already in Vegas.
As of now, the Raiders appear wise for defying expectations. Bowers has a bright future ahead of him and could become a celebrity.
