Dylan Edwards returned a kickoff for a score, Avery Johnson tossed for two touchdowns, and No. 14 In a nonconference game on Friday night in Manhattan, Kansas, Kansas State defeated No. 20 Arizona 31–7, snapping the longest winning run in the country.
Despite leading 7-0 on the opening possession of the game, Arizona (2-1), which has won nine straight games, was unable to generate any offense.
Early in the second quarter, Edwards’ 71-yard return gave Kansas State (3-0) a 14-7 lead. Johnson, on the other hand, was a dual threat, gaining 156 yards on 14 of 23 throws and running for 110 yards on 17 carries.
Despite being a Big 12 matchup, the outcome is not taken into account when determining league standings. The match was maintained on the schedule as a nonconference matchup when Arizona joined the Big 12 this season.
Other than Tetairoa McMillan and Noah Fifita’s pass hookup, Arizona’s offensive output was little. McMillan caught 11 passes for 138 yards, while Fifita completed 26 of 42 passes for 268 yards.
During the second quarter, Fifita made an expensive interception. Keenan Garber picked him off in the end zone as he fired a late pass over the middle, keeping his team’s advantage at 14-7.
With 9:29 remaining in the third quarter, Johnson completed a touchdown drive with a 9-yard pass to Brayden Loftin, giving Kansas State a 21-7 lead. Jayce Brown’s 48-yard completion on third-and-12 had set up the drive.
Late in the quarter, DJ Giddens (86 yards gained on foot) scored on a 1-yard run to give the team a 28–7 advantage.
Arizona was limited to 324 total yards by Kansas State.
After Arizona’s opening possession, Kansas State responded with a 15-play touchdown drive. A 3-yard pass from Johnson to Will Swanson late in the first quarter tied the score at 7.
With nine seconds remaining in the half, K-State reached the Arizona 19, but they missed an opportunity to extend their lead to 14-7. Johnson scurried to save the following play, and after a five-yard gain, the timer went off.
