Everyone is aware of the wide receiver situation the Steelers are facing. This explains why Omar Khan made such a concerted effort to acquire a wide receiver in the offseason and why a trade for Brandon Aiyuk was finalized prior to the 49ers shocking Pittsburgh.
The Steelers proceeded with their roster after trade possibilities were rejected. Sadly, only three weeks into the season, the receiver position appears much more dire.
Ben Skowronek, a wide receiver, will be placed on injured reserve, according to Teresa Varley of Steelers.com on September 18. Prior to getting hurt in Week 2 against the Broncos, Skowronek was the Steelers’ backup receiver and special teams gunner.
The Steelers can’t afford to lose any more depth on their roster, even though Skowronek wasn’t exactly a key component of the team’s winning recipe.
Few fans are aware of how thin the Steelers wide receiver depth is.
There are just three healthy receivers on the 53-man roster for the Pittsburgh Steelers going into their Week 3 battle against the Los Angeles Chargers: George Pickens, Van Jefferson, and Scotty Miller.
third-round rookie selection Roman Wilson is still recovering from an ankle injury he sustained during the Steelers’ first padded practice of training camp. Having missed the whole preseason, he has yet to play a snap in the NFL.
Although Mike Tomlin did not address injuries prior to Week 3, Calvin Austin III was a quick receiver who was hit in the head and neck area by a terrifying blow against the Broncos and did not return to the game. The Steelers will still have four receivers if Austin is healthy enough to play this week (if Wilson is sidelined again).
The NFL’s smallest wide receiver room belongs to the Steelers, and Skowronek’s injury didn’t help. What would happen, do you think, if George Pickens had to miss time? It would be impossible for the offensive to operate.
With the exception of Pickens, no Steelers receiver has more than 15 receiving yards as of Week 3. Pittsburgh is facing a concerning scenario due to injuries at the wide receiver position. It would be prudent for them to look for outside assistance because of the extremely thin depth at the position.
