After five years in the NFL, Andrew Dowell will need to put in even more work.
The New Orleans Saints cut loose the former Michigan State linebacker on Tuesday, the last day for teams to trim their roster to 53 men. According to reports, Dowell is a candidate to join with the practice squad of the team.
Dowell, a former undrafted free agent, has established himself as a star on special teams for the Saints, amassing 22 tackles, two forced fumbles, and one blocked punt in 34 games. He had a knee ailment last season that kept him out of action.
Dowell and his twin brother David, who went on to start as a safety for the Spartans, came to Michigan State in 2015. Before leaving the team in 2021, Michael, their younger brother, played defensive back for Michigan State in 2020 and 2021.
Dowell spent four years with the Spartans, starting 34 games and totaling 260 tackles in 51 games, including 15 for a loss, 5.5 sacks, one interception, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. He was waived that summer after signing with the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and was eventually added to the practice squad in New Orleans.
