ANGELES — Coach Sean McVay said on Tuesday that Los Angeles Rams running back Kyren Williams will return punts this season.
“It’s another opportunity for him to get touches and impact the game,” McVay stated. “And you feel comfortable with that because of the confidence in Blake Corum and Ronnie Rivers being able to spell him if need be.”
Despite playing in just 12 games the previous season, Williams averaged almost 22 touches per game and finished third in the NFL in running. Williams had a sprained ankle in the midst of the season, which kept him out of four games. He rested after the Rams had secured a postseason spot in the fifth game.
In an attempt to relieve some of Williams’ workload, the Rams selected Corum in the third round of the draft in April. McVay stated the night of the draft that he saw “a lot of similarities” between the two running backs.
Williams missed time during his rookie season due to a high ankle injury, but he has since participated in 22 games. In addition, he suffered a broken hand during the Rams’ playoff defeat to the Detroit Lions, necessitating surgery in the summer. He also missed the majority of the Rams’ offseason program due to the necessity to repair a foot injury.
Williams gained 1,144 yards and 12 touchdowns on 228 carries during the previous campaign. In addition, he has three touchdowns and 32 catches.
