In their preseason finale on Sunday against the Tennessee Titans, the New Orleans Saints will not start Derek Carr at quarterback. based on information provided by Nick Underhill.
In two preseason games, Carr completed 11 of 15 throws for 59 yards. In the first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, he only appeared in one series. Getting greater playing time last week against the San Francisco 49ers, Carr orchestrated a 16-play, 95-yard drive that resulted in a touchdown before sitting down for the remainder of the game.
It’s not just Carr who won’t be playing for the first team. There won’t be much, if any, action for the majority of the starters for the Saints and Titans. The intention is to minimize the risk of harm to the first-team players.
Jake Haener and Spencer Rattler will likely split time at quarterback for New Orleans. Two quarters of action are anticipated for each quarterback. The starter for the game has not yet been formally announced by Saints coach Dennis Allen.

Entering his second season with New Orleans is Jake Haener. He was the team’s backup quarterback for the most of his rookie season after being selected in the fourth round out of Fresno State the year before, and he did not play a snap. Haener has completed 16 of 26 throws for 183 yards this preseason.
Rattler is a South Carolina native selected in the fifth round as a rookie. He has completed 13 of 25 passes for 97 yards in his two preseason games. Starting the season, both quarterbacks are vying for Carr’s backup position. In the first game, both players looked great against Arizona; however, against the 49ers, they were a touch less consistent.
By Tuesday, August 27 at 4 p.m., all NFL teams must reduce their active rosters to 53 players. September 8 is the Saints’ home opener in the 2024–25 regular season versus the Carolina Panthers.
