At the Democratic National Convention on Thursday night, Stephen Curry—the three-point-shooting Golden State Warrior and NBA All-Star who recently earned a gold medal with Team USA—appeared via video to support Vice President Kamala Harris for the position of next president of the United States.
Reminding us all that “together we can do all things and continue to inspire the world,” Curry stated, his gold medal around his neck, of the “unity on and off the court” during the Olympics.
He continued, “And for that reason, I think that Kamala as president could restore unity and keep our nation moving forward.” “This is about ensuring that families can be cared for during their most precious times, and about maintaining hope and belief in our country.”
Two days prior to Curry’s speech, Steve Kerr—the coach of the United States team in Paris as well as the Warriors club that has won numerous championships—spoke in person at the Democratic convention in Chicago. Additionally, he supported Harris and her campaign companion for vice president, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
According to Kerr, a leader must “tell the truth,” “display dignity,” and “care for and love the people that they are leading.” He added that Harris and Walz possess those attributes. It was evident from his implication that the former president Trump does not.
One of the most liberal voices in the NBA and a former sparring partner of Trump, Kerr added that “we can — in the words of the great Steph Curry — we can tell Donald Trump, ‘Night, night.'” This will happen when the election results are tabulated in November.
Curry makes the “night, night” gesture on the court, resting his face on his hands and seemingly going to sleep, signaling to opponents that the game is almost over.
In his Thursday video, Curry did not make the move himself. He did, however, bring up the Warriors’ trip to the White House last year, which was arranged at President Biden’s invitation to commemorate the team’s 2022 NBA championship. That’s how he got to know Harris.
“There’s one thing I knew then, and I know for sure now: She looks good in the Oval Office,” he remarked.
After Curry denounced Trump’s attacks on Black athletes who were kneeling during the playing of the national anthem to protest the treatment of Black people by police, Trump withdrew another Warriors invitation to the White House to celebrate their 2017 title.
Curry made a reference to another DNC speaker, possibly its most well-known speech, as he concluded his brief film.
“Do something, to borrow Michelle Obama’s words.” To applause from the convention floor, Curry said. “Vote and participate. In November, let’s turn heads like never before.
