Matthew Stafford, the quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams, made a limited comeback to practice on Monday after being out during the week due to a hamstring issue, per several sources. As the Rams play it safe with the 36-year-old’s ailment, Stafford was restricted to individual drills and side work with wide outs before becoming an observer for 11-on-11 drills. On Wednesday, he was taken out of a combined practice with the Dallas Cowboys.
“I wanted to be smart with him, that was my biggest thing,” head coach Sean McVay of the Rams stated on Monday. Didn’t believe it would be worth it if he made a hasty movement that set him back. He feels fantastic. It’s a positive thing that he was irritated with me for not allowing him to practice today; it’s what makes him an excellent competitor.
So far, the Rams have used two preseason games to determine Stafford’s backup, and the NFL’s top passer with 437 passing yards is Stetson Bennett. With 41 completions in 69 attempts during preseason play, he also leads the league. Last season, Stafford completed 62.6 percent of his throws for 3,965 yards and 24 touchdowns with 11 interceptions, earning him a spot in his second Pro Bowl of his career. The Rams finished 10-7 in 2023 before falling to the Detroit Lions 24-23 on the road in the wild-card round of the playoffs.
Stafford completed 25 of 36 passes for 367 yards and two scores against his old team. The Rams will make their way back to Detroit on September 8th to play the Lions in a Sunday Night Football match.
