In 2024, the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers are expected to contend for the top spot in the NFC North. Given that the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears are taking a quarterbacking turn, it might be the case for the next few years.

During their Monday afternoon maneuvers, the Lions featured a former Packers player in one of their movements.

Linebacker Ty Summers is a new addition to the Lions, according to their official Twitter account (X).

The Jaguars declared on Sunday that Summers had been released.

The linebacker’s decision to join the team after playing for the Saints in 2023 was revealed in May. Summers played on 301 special teams plays and 0 defensive plays in the regular season of the previous year. Since 2021, the veteran has not taken a defensive snap.

The Green Bay Packers selected the 28-year-old in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL draft. He played for the Jacksonville Jaguars the next season and for the New Orleans Saints the final two. The 6-foot-1, 242-pound defender has 42 solo tackles, one pass deflection, and one fumble recovery in 1,521 combined snaps (1,316 on special teams).

His NFL.com scouting assessment describes him as a “inside linebacker with the physical attributes of an NFL player but lacking the necessary instincts and feel to make plays on his terms.” Summers might very well run a pre-draft sub-4.6 40, which could make him a late-round target for clubs who see him as back-end depth and a potential core special team player, even though he won’t always play at his best speed.
