With their first-round selection, the New York Yankees upset the first-night atmosphere of the MLB Draft on Sunday night by selecting Ben Hess, a strikeout machine from Alabama. It was widely believed that, at their obviously less-than-ideal location, the Yankees would select from a variety of falling bats. Rather, they selected a starter with enormous potential who also has a history of back issues in high school, an existing flexor injury, and a 5.80 ERA in 2024 (yes, a record amount of strikeouts). Hess has enormous potential. Is Hess a better option at pick 53 than selection 26? would have appeared somewhat more radiant.
Hess and Bryce Cunningham of Vanderbilt were New York’s first two selections; both were collegiate arms who, in theory, wouldn’t command as much bonus pool money as high school players who need to be talked out of attending college. Particularly with the Hess selection, the Yankees may have a sizable amount of overslot cash available. We’ll list the Yankees’ selections below as the draft progresses, and we’ll update this page with new information as players commit to the Bombers.
Rounds 3–10 will take place on Day 2 (Monday), while Rounds 11–20 on Day 3 will involve a lot of the heavy lifting. Teams are no longer allowed to select a Mike Piazza-type player in the 52nd round; however, if you have a potential Hall of Famer on your roster, we advise you to select him earlier. That’s where. Applied science to solve that issue.
In addition, the Yankees did not earn a single compensatory pick in this particular draft due to the loss of a designated free agent.
2024 Yankees MLB Draft Tracker: Round 1 Bonuses and Signings Update, No. 26 Overall: $2,747,500 (signed); $3,332,900 (slot value) for Ben Hess, RHP, Alabama
No. 53 in Round 2 In total, Bryce Cunningham, RHP, Vanderbilt (Value of slot: $1,721,200; signed for $2,297,500)
Round 3, Number 89 Overall: $837,400 (signed); $838,900 (slot value) for Thatcher Hurd, RHP, LSU
A Manhattan Beach, California, native and right-handed pitcher? Thatcher Hurd was well-known to Damon Oppenheimer even before he arrived at LSU. Another pitcher whose numbers don’t match his abilities; on March 13, 2023, he was named College Baseball National Player of the Week; nevertheless, his ERA for the season was 6.55 last year, and in 2023, it was 5.68.
Fourth Round, No. 119 The slot value of Gage Ziehl, RHP, Miami is $606,700 overall.
Converted closer Ziehl was ranked 89th overall by MLB Pipeline prior to the draft. Strangely, the Yankees selected him 89th overall, but they had to wait 30 selections to get him. Despite entering the game out of the bullpen as a freshman and reaching 97 runs, the six-foot Hurricane eventually made the transition to the rotation and became a reliable Friday night starter. Interesting choice.
Round 5, Number 152 Overall: Greysen Carter, RHP, Vanderbilt (signed for $440,100, the exact slot value).
Carter is the second pitcher selected by the Yankees from the Vandy Boys pitching staff. Another swingman whose subpar performance (6.58 ERA in 2024) has been concealed by an electrifying fastball (70 grade, dating back to high school).
No. 181 in Round 6. All in all, Griffin Herring, LHP, LSU (Slot Value: $339,600) – This signing came as a bit of a surprise. With a $797,500 overslot.
One more pitcher. The winners of the 2023 College World Series are another team that will return. Herring was a sweeper and filthy reliever who would make a good addition to the Yankees’ bullpen. possibilities for quick rise.
Round 7, Number 211 In total: Wyatt Parliament, RHP, Virginia Tech – Signed, $199,350 (Slot Value: $265,800). Underslot.
6’4″. 215 lbs. MLB Pipeline did not profile this. a powerful right-hand pitcher. Another in a draft that is quickly turning into something absurdly repetitive for the New York Yankees.
No. 241 in Round 8 In total: Tyler Wilson, OF, Grand Canyon (Slot Worth: $215,100) – $47,500 for a signed copy. Much underslot.
A non-pitcher, what? Hopefully, the Taiwanese switch-hitter will do better in the Yankee system than Tayler Aguilar, who was selected in the 15th round of the Grand Canyon draft two years ago and has since been released.
No. 271 in Round 9. Overall: Tanner Bauman, LHP, Auburn, signed for a bonus of $37,500, with a slot value of $192,600. Much underslot.
Remain calm. Pitching was insufficient for the Yankees in the first seven rounds. They added a 6’5″, 225-pound burner and their second southpaw of the round this time, going lefty again.
Round 10, Number 301 In total: Joe Delossantos, OF, William & Mary (Slot Worth: $181,600) – Acknowledgment, Unspecified Bonus
The senior outfielder, who swings right-handed, is a prolific hitter at the university level.
No. 331 in Round 11 Overall: Northwest Florida State Junior College’s Mack Estrada, RHP
No. 361 in Round 12 All in all, Kansas State’s Brendan Jones, CF, signed. Fantastic suit. $150,000.
No. 391 in Round 13. Overall: Signed (and excited), $150,000, Dillon Lewis, OF, Queens University of Charlotte.
No. 421 in Round 14 Overall: Signed, $150,000, Austin Green, 2B, Texas Tech
No. 451 in Round 15, Overall: Wofford’s Marshall Toole, OF, signed a $150,000 contract.
No. 481 in Round 16 In total: Xavier Rivas, LHP, Ole Miss – $150,000 – signed.
No. 511, Round 17. In summary, JoJo Jackson, an OF and switch-hitter for Georgia State, signed on July 18, 2024. $150,000.
No. 541 in Round 18, Gus Hughes, RHP, signed a $50,000 contract with High Point University overall.
No. 571, Round 19. In total: $50,000 signed by Oakland University’s RHP Brandon Decker.
No. 601, Round 20 Overall: Pierce County High School (Georgia)’s Cole Royer, RHP
That’s the first. Throughout the Yankees’ whole draft, there is only one high schooler. Stay tuned to find out if these two genuinely intend to be together for the long haul.
