Jalen Brunson received a lot of appreciation for giving up a sizable salary to stay with the New York Knicks and provide the franchise more roster flexibility. Some, though, questioned his choice to pass up the chance to increase his income now.
On Thursday, Brunson discussed his contract choice during his Knicks captain’s introduction. In essence, he replied that he was content with his current situation and that the criticism did not affect him.
“I simply knew that by doing this, we would have a great deal of flexibility and be well-positioned to win,” Brunson remarked. “I am aware that many individuals disagree with it. Many people believe that from an individual perspective, it is not wise. All I know is that I feel at ease here. I feel at home here. I don’t give a damn about what people think or say. Their views are just that—their opinions. That is ideal. They are theirs to possess. All I’m thinking about is what we’re creating here and how we can get better.
For Brunson, the Knicks and their supporters’ opinions regarding the contract are the only things that truly count. The latter group, as we now know, believes he can do no wrong at this moment.
Brunson effectively gave up $113 million in prospective earnings by joining now. The Knicks will profit from having more leeway to avoid the luxury tax, which will eventually improve team depth.
