TORONTO (AP) – Right-hander Jon Gray of the Texas Rangers departed Sunday’s game against Toronto without throwing a pitch because he was experiencing pain in his right groin during the first inning’s warm-up.
The Rangers replaced Gray with right-hander Jonathan Hernández after he only managed two outs from starter Michael Lorenzen in Saturday’s 7-3 loss.
Of his early departure, Gray remarked, “It’s the worst.” “It seems like a nightmare. It’s absurd. I just went into the game knowing that the team needed me to have a huge game. It’s awful to not even be able to throw a pitch. It’s terrible.”
Gray had a minor right groin strain that put him on the 15-day injured list from May 22 to June 7. However, Gray noted that this ailment felt different from the one before it. Even though he was hurting while warming up in the bullpen, he attempted to start the game.
“I just wanted to try to see if I could get through it,” Gray stated. “I couldn´t really get my leg up off the ground trying to warm up.”
Gray had a 3.73 ERA going into 20 games and was 5-4. During his four July appearances, three of which were starts, he had a 3.57 ERA and was 2-0. The ten-year veteran is currently on his third Rangers season. After the 2021 season, he signed a four-year deal with Texas, leaving Colorado behind.
Hernández (3-1) gave up five runs in 2 1/3 innings, including a two-run home run to Daulton Varsho in the first. Jacob Latz, a lefty, came in to replace Hernández and got four outs while giving up just one run.
In Sunday’s fifth inning, Lorenzen replaced Latz and retired the side on 14 pitches. After pitching the last four innings, the right-hander gave up three hits and one run.
After Gray left, Bochy said Lorenzen approached him and offered to pitch.
Bochy declared, “I have so much to say about what he did.” “That´s quite a job he did to pick us up.”
Before being replaced on Saturday after throwing 40 pitches, Lorenzen tossed 55 on Sunday.
With the exception of openers, Lorenzen is the only Rangers pitcher since right-hander Roger Pavlik on August 14 and 15, 1992, to throw on back-to-back days and record at least one start. On the first day, Pavlik started and only pitched 1/3 of an inning. On the second day, he relieved for one inning.
