By the conclusion of the season, CBS Sports’ Brad Crawford believes that Walker White would surpass Payton Thorne as Hugh Freeze’s preferred quarterback for the Auburn football team. He included this prediction in an article that highlights one for each SEC school.
According to Crawford, there is a perception on the Plains that White represents the “future of the program under center.”
“Hugh Freeze was quick to compliment each of his four scholarship quarterbacks coming out of spring, including his incumbent, but the belief around Auburn is 2024 signee Walker White is the future of the program under center,” Crawford began by stating, “Could he be the guy for Auburn later this year if Payton Thorne has another up-and-down campaign?”
In fact, Thorne’s confidence is at an all-time high after the 2024 A-Day spring game. Thorne not only got along well with Cam Coleman, the incoming five-star wide receiver, but he also threw some of his greatest passes since joining Auburn.
On April 6, White wasn’t even the second-most spectacular quarterback. In orange and blue, Holden Geriner was more spectacular than ever, while Hank Brown kept displaying flashes of his ability. Except for Thorne, none of them appeared to be a clear, immediate solution; instead, they all appeared to be relative works in progress.
Having said that, White enrolled early. He still has time to fulfill his vow to be the program’s future.
Assuming he would start as a true freshman is undoubtedly a bold prediction.
Only Auburn football, Oklahoma football, and Mizzou football had unfavorable hot take predictions.
Crawford generally made accurate forecasts about the SEC. Regrettably, AU was among a select few universities—Mizzou and Oklahoma included—who received hot take predictions that were biased negatively.
While Mizzou is destined for either contention or being exposed as a pretender, Auburn is a well-liked riser prediction, and OU is a relative unknown in a new conference.
