DALLAS — Garrett Nussmeier, the quarterback for LSU, had to wait his time.
After sitting behind first-round pick and Heisman winner Jayden Daniels for the previous two seasons, the former four-star signee from neighboring Flower Mound, Texas, suddenly gets the chance to lead the team on the field. As Oklahoma joins the Southeastern Conference, he will play a different opponent this year, which will be one of his challenges.
The Sooners’ season finale will likely be played at night, depending on how both teams’ seasons play out. The Sooners will play LSU on the road. The ambiance of LSU’s Death Valley Stadium is comparable to that of one of the most intimidating college football venues. However, LSU’s fourth-year quarterback Nussmeier stated during the SEC Media Days on Monday that both Texas and OU are accustomed to competing on large venues.
Indeed, Nussmeier remarked, “There’s no experience like Tiger Stadium at night.” “There’s nothing like nighttime college football in Death Valley.” However, I believe that Texas and OU have both already participated in games on major platforms. Death Valley is something remarkable, even if I doubt they’ll learn anything new from it.”
Despite the fact that Oklahoma and LSU haven’t played each other often until this season, Nussmeier has followed the Sooners closely enough to be aware of their successful track record. He gave tribute to the previous Sooners teams, especially the ones that were led by Baker Mayfield.
“It’s a legendary program,” Nussemier remarked of Oklahoma. “I get to watch things as a college football fan.” Having the opportunity to watch Baker Mayfield play and appreciate his talent made me a huge admirer. Texas and OU are both, in my opinion, legendary programs. Their inclusion in the SEC, in my opinion, can only improve the competition. At the end of the regular season, Nussmeier will probably face Oklahoma quarterback Jackson Arnold when the Sooners and LSU take the field. Playing in eighteen games, Nussmeier’s lone start occurred in LSU’s bowl victory over Wisconsin in the previous season. He has thrown for 1,720 yards and completed 59% of his passes for eleven touchdowns and seven interceptions. Conversely, Arnold is coming off of a few playing sessions throughout the regular season, as well as a starting position versus Arizona in the Alamo Bowl. Despite their little playing time, both players have shown promise, and this season will provide opportunities for them to further their careers.
Nussmeier remarked, “I got to spend a lot of time with Jackson, actually.” Both as a person and as a gamer, I enjoy him. He is incredibly gifted. I anticipate him doing quite well this year. I have no doubt that he will perform admirably for OU. I can’t wait to see him.”
