The South Carolina Gamecocks’ quarterback position will be different in 2024, according to head coach Shane Beamer, after the team sent Spencer Rattler to the NFL during the offseason. Additionally, Robby Ashford, a former quarterback for Auburn, joined the Gamecocks in January and is now a part of the new-look quarterback room at South Carolina.
In the electronic media room on Monday, Beamer stated of Ashford, “Robby has really grown and done a great job since he came to our program in January from Auburn.” “You’re talking about a great young man who is really athletic, which explains his accomplishments as a football player and his baseball career.”
Ashford began his career at Oregon, where he was a member of the football and baseball teams, before spending two seasons at Auburn.
In his two seasons on The Plains, Ashford, who transferred to Auburn prior of the 2022 season, had little over 1,700 throwing yards, nine touchdowns, and nine interceptions.
Out of Ashford’s 1,758 throwing yards, 1,613 came in 2022, when Ashford started nine games as Auburn’s starting quarterback after taking over in Week 4.
Ashford was part of a quarterback rotation with Auburn’s Payton Thorne last autumn. Thorne was eventually selected the Tigers’ starter and handled the majority of Auburn’s quarterback responsibilities. As the season went on, Ashford noticed a gradual decline in playing time and made the decision to use the transfer site at the end of the regular season.
Ashford joined redshirt freshman LaNorris Sellers in the South Carolina quarterback room after committing to the university in January.
Regarding Ashford and Sellers, Beamer stated on Monday, “He’s started games in the SEC, he’s come in and helped make LaNorris Sellers better and LaNorris has helped make Robby better.” “Just a really great addition to our program. He has a great personality, a lot of energy, and he has already helped us improve both on and off the field.”
Despite their intense spring competition, Ashford is predicted to be chasing Sellers, who will likely start at quarterback for South Carolina come fall camp.
Spencer Rattler is an outstanding player who needs to be replaced, Beamer stated at the stage on Monday. “We will definitely have a different look at quarterback, where we have two 240-pound guys who can throw and run equally well: LaNorris Sellers and Robby Ashford.”
