Since joining the Mavericks, Klay Thompson has swapped Steph Curry for Luka Doncic.
During his first news conference, the 13-year NBA veteran and five-time All-Star disclosed that he signed with Dallas and received a message from Luka.
“[Doncic] texted me and expressed his excitement, and I responded with the same message, so I think there’s mutual respect there,” Thompson said to reporters on Tuesday. “Well, I saw him at the conclusion of the 2022 West Finals, and I told him how much I admired his play, how he truly uplifts his teammates, and how his potential was limitless.”
And I believe that struck a chord with him because he was really gracious in losing. I also admire people that don’t back down in the face of difficulty and give it their all, and Luka is one of those people. Thus, I believe we can maximize each other’s strengths. I genuinely do.
“Luka, you watched his EuroLeague highlights even before he was signed by the NBA, and you thought, ‘This eighteen-year-old is doing this to grown men?'” said Klay. “This is insane,” so…You could tell he was a terrific player by the impression he made even as a rookie.
The combination of Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, and Luka might prove to be a winning formula for Dallas in terms of talent and basketball acumen.
Thompson appears to think so, at least.
“I saw, I can really help this team,” Klay remarked after seeing the Mavs play in the NBA Finals for the 2023–24 season. “They are exactly there.Luka and Dirk both experienced it in their first Finals. I was genuinely thrilled to be here because we are pounding on the door.
