The Dallas Mavericks have somewhat reconstructed the team that carried them to the 2024 NBA Finals as the NBA offseason gets underway.
With the exception of Derrick Jones Jr., who signed with the LA Clippers, Dallas retained the majority of their core players. They also significantly increased their shooting when they acquired Klay Thompson through a sign-and-trade.
Dallas has one roster spot open right now, and they have a ton of options to choose from, but it might seem like the last player needed to complete the roster has been in front of Mavs supporters for a while.
Mavericks intend to sign Markieff Morris again
NBA insider Marc Stein claims that the Mavs are “sure” to re-sign veteran forward Markieff Morris, who will become a free agent this summer (subscription required).
Morris assured Mavs supporters he would return for the upcoming season, and this Stein report essentially validates that.
Morris and the Mavs are clearly interested in getting back together, and Dallas made the right decision in bringing him back given how important he is to the team. With one of his locker room speeches helping them turn the season around, Morris stepped up as a seasoned leader last season, and it looks like they’ll have him around for the upcoming one.
Morris played in 26 games for Dallas last season, averaging 2.5 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 0.6 assists while shooting 35.7 percent from beyond the arc. Although Morris didn’t play much, he was a great asset off the bench.
Everyone in the organization who knows him well has said great things about him. He was always the first to stand up for his teammates. The Mavs made the right decision in bringing him back, presumably on a minimum contract, after Jason Kidd named him the team’s MVP the previous season.
For a low cost, they are able to retain one of the veterans who contributed to keeping this team together. Morris can still light it up from downtown when he checks into the game, but I have no doubt that next season will see him play fewer minutes and contribute more from the bench.
Morris appears set to sign a new contract with the Mavs, and the team would be well served by keeping him on board.
