Domi recently signed a $3 million one-year contract with the Maple Leafs on July 2, 2023. In 80 games during his rookie campaign with the Maple Leafs, he totaled 47 points with 9 goals and 38 assists. In seven playoff games, he totaled four points with one goal and three assists.

The Arizona Coyotes selected Domi with the 12th overall pick in the 2013 NHL draft. He has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Carolina Hurricanes in his NHL career.

Domi Desired to Remain a Maple Leaf
Domi expressed his desire to stay with the Maple Leafs after the team was eliminated by the Boston Bruins in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Because his father Tie was a Maple Leafs player in the 1999–1990 season and again from 1995 to 2006, Domi was raised as a Maple Leafs supporter. Domi then expressed his hope that he would be able to sign an extension with Toronto by the summer.

At the year-end press conference, Domi declared, “I loved every minute of it” (via Toronto Sun). “I definitely didn’t take it for granted. Do I wish to return? Indeed. This team has all the potential to accomplish something exceptional, and I would love to support them in doing so.

“Beyond representing the Maple Leafs, there’s no better feeling than being a member of the NHL. It’s unbeatable, especially if you grew up in Toronto. Winning here would be the only way to top that. I realize I talk about it a lot. But really, finding a way to win is all that matters in this locker room.

This past season, Domi was a Maple Leafs fan favorite.

Trade Tanev’s Rights for Maple Leafs
On June 29, Toronto went out and bought Chris Tanev’s signing rights from the Stars.

By obtaining his rights, Toronto can speak with Tanev before free agency begins on July 1st, which was a popular target for the Maple Leafs in free agency.

According to Sportsnet, Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving stated, “We want to jump the queue here as best we could and get to him before free agency started.” I’m familiar with the player. Now let’s get to work on it.

“He’s simply a superb defensive back.” We often discuss how offensive players should see plays early. Treliving stated, “He does the same thing, but he does it on the defensive side of the puck. “A total fighter. He is a cultural ambassador for your space. I am aware of his age, listen. However, I believe that he has demonstrated in the last year that he is among the league’s best defensive players and shutdown defensemen. He’s also a real shot. He is the epitome of what a great teammate should be.

It’s thrilling. An incredible player. Fantastic individual. If we can pull everything together, he’ll play a significant role in our group, Treliving continued.

In 75 games between the Flames and Stars the previous season, Tanev totaled 19 points with 2 goals and 17 assists.
