Lawrence Cager, a former Georgia Bulldog, is becoming more and more of an offensive factor for the New York Giants.

With the hiring of head coach Kirby Smart, the number of players from Georgia’s football program who have entered the NFL has increased. Even though they have been in the league for a while, some Georgia players from the Smart era are still having an impact on the professional football scene.

Lawrence Cager is one of those players. The New York Jets signed him despite his lack of draft selection in the 2020 class. Having moved from wide receiver, where he played at Georgia, to tight end, Cager is off to a great start with the New York Giants. During OTAs, ESPN even named Cager the Giants’ most impressive player. What they wrote is as follows:

“Tight end With Darren Waller’s retirement, others had more opportunities. This spring, it appeared that Cager and Theo Johnson, a fourth-round pick, would be expected to handle the pass-catching duties. Both played in what is essentially a passing camp and got some first-team reps. Cager was even described by coach Brian Daboll as “probably one of the most improved players throughout the offseason,” which may pave the way for him to have a big season.– Jordan Raanan”

Cager hauled in 19 receptions for 189 yards and two touchdowns during his four-year NFL career. For his final collegiate season, he transferred to Georgia after beginning his career with the Miami Hurricanes. He finished the 2019 season with 33 receptions for 476 yards and four touchdowns while playing for the Bulldogs.
