The Boston Bruins are expected to have a busy offseason, and it looks like they have already decided on one of their bottom-six forwards.
Joakim Persson, Oskar Steen’s agent, told the VF publication that the soon-to-be free agent will be searching for a new team. Officially, NHL free agency starts on July 1.
Through Google Translate, Persson said to VF, “Boston has given us permission to already start talking to other teams to see what interest there is.” “Those are the conversations we are currently having, and on June 28–29, I’ll be heading to Vegas for the NHL draft, where I hope to continue having conversations and dialogues.”
Boston placed Steen on waivers in February, and he was later shipped back to Providence. He only managed one point in 34 games for the Bruins, a goal against the Buffalo Sabres on November 14. Steen cleared waivers and played for Providence until the end of the 2023–24 season.
In 25 games for Providence, the 26-year-old finished with 16 points (12 goals, 4 assists).
General manager Don Sweeney of the Boston Bruins stated that he anticipates being “aggressive” this summer following the team’s elimination by the Florida Panthers in the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.
Goalie Jeremy Swayman is confident that he will sign a long-term contract, but Sweeney has a long list of things he needs to get done. The Bruins would gain by adding a true No. 1 center, but they also need to decide which free agents, if any, they want to re-sign, including Jake DeBrusk.
Regarding Linus Ullmark, who will enter the final year of his contract in 2024–25, Sweeney stated they would investigate all of their options.
