The Minnesota Vikings defense is in for a difficult season.
They may need to take over the offense in the first few games of the season while the team breaks in a new starting quarterback amid a plethora of changes up front and multiple additions to the secondary.
Starting cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. of the Vikings, who is about to enter a contract year, will be crucial to that.
“I was at the Vikings mandatory minicamp’s last day.” Had a great talk with cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. on June 11th, according to Darren Wolfson on “Minnesota Sports with Mackey & Judd.” “Hey, you’re in a contract year?,” I asked him. “Yeah, I don’t want to go anywhere else,” he replies. He was speaking from the heart. For the remainder of his career, he hopes to stay here. Byron Murphy enjoys being a Viking to that extent.
He said to his agent, “Hey, let’s see if we can work out some sort of extension before the season starts. Engage the Vikings, engage [Vikings executive vice president of football operations] Rob Brzezinksi.”

“I don’t believe I’m leaving. On June 7, Murphy said to Wolfson, “That’s my mindset.” I would like to remain here. I adore this location. As I mentioned earlier, I fell in love on Day 1 of my time here. I therefore don’t want to disappear. For the remainder of my career, I want to remain here. In the locker room, I adore these guys. I adore the culture here; this place is amazing in every way. I’m going to work myself to the bone in order to stay here for good.
“I’ve been attempting to get an extension from the agent.” However, I’m going to just lock in for now. All those things, in my opinion, God will take care of. However, I’m just going to come on out here and play ball. Of course, though, I want to stay here. I’m going to continue creating noise in this area in order to stay and definitely attract their attention.
Murphy was chosen by the Arizona Cardinals in the second round of the 2019 draft.
In 2023, he signed a two-year, $17.5 million contract with the Vikings as a free agent. He has a $10.9 million 2024 cap hit and a $4.2 million 2025 (void year) dead cap hit.

That might serve as a powerful motivator to work on an extension. However, Murphy’s 2023 Pro Football Focus coverage grade was 148th. Additionally, according to Pro Football Reference, he allowed 67.3% completion in his coverage, which is his second-highest (worst) career mark.
Murphy might be left waiting because he has never permitted less than 63.8% completion.
Wolfson remarked, “I don’t feel like anything is off the ground.” “I’m not sure what category we want to use for his 2023 campaign. Ordinary? A tad bit above average? Was he outstanding? I’m not sure if he was exceptional. Before I do anything in the way of a contract extension, if I’m the Vikings, I want to make sure he has a better year in ’24 than ’23.
The Vikings’ decision to extend Justin Jefferson removed a significant roadblock. But in addition to their other impending contract situations, they still have Christian Darrisaw at left tackle.
Murphy’s situation is further complicated by the fact that he is getting ready to play inside at slot cornerback, which the panel felt might be advantageous for both sides. However, it will depend on someone else assuming responsibility externally.
Host Judd Zulgad made the case for Murphy’s full-time relocation inside the Vikings.
He likened Murphy’s circumstances to those of former Vikings star Antoine Winfield, pointing out that Winfield’s career was prolonged by switching to the slot. His days as a perimeter player were also over.

“I would like to see you find two boundary corners and have Byron Murphy Jr. play exclusively inside because it’s akin to a starting position,” Zulgad stated. I don’t think he’s a good enough player to make that [back and forth] move. Remember that they are all regarded as cornerbacks. However, they’re not. Another task is the nickel’s interior corner.
Throughout his career, Murphy has played snaps inside at Nickelback and is expected to see more action there. However, current rookie Mekhi Blackmon showed promise in his first season, and Khyree Jackson, a fourth-round pick, and veteran Shaquill Griffin could be options on the outside.
Along with Blackmon, recent draft selections Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans are also considered.
Murphy could play even faster with fewer changes in his duties from play to play if he moves inside permanently, strengthening the Vikings secondary.
“I can be placed anywhere on the field by you. Anywhere you put me, I’ll play. Murphy told reporters on May 29. “I’m going to go play and try my best at it.” The slot has, of course, a little more space. After that, you’ll be covering some smaller, quicker players—twitcher guys. But in the end, you’re just a database. You must lock up, either indoors or outdoors.
