Unexpectedly, the former head coach of Wisconsin has left the Texas football program.
The Texas football program is among the best in the nation going into the 2024 campaign. Along with Oklahoma, their move to the SEC and Quinn Ewers’s Heisman Trophy candidacy will be key plot points to follow this season.
June and July are pretty quiet months in sports, but according to a report from Joe Cook of On3, the Texas football program is changing since former Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst has left the program.
“Paul Chryst has left the Texas football program,” an Inside Texas spokesman for the University of Texas said late on Wednesday night. Chryst served as head coach Steve Sarkisian’s special assistant in 2023.
Chryst was an assistant coach under Steve Sarkisian for the Texas football team last season, but he is no longer associated with the program. Additionally, at the end of May, he was spotted at a Green Bay Packers practice, which prompted a lot of rumors. However, Chryst’s destination has not yet been officially announced.
Paul Chryst’s tenure at Texas concludes
Chryst was fired as the head coach of Wisconsin in the middle of the 2022 season, and he only stayed with the Longhorns for a single year. From 2005 until 2011, Chryst served as an assistant coach for the Badgers before taking a position as head coach at Pitt. He returned to Madison in 2015, where he served as head coach until 2022.
Chryst finished 62–26 overall with 43 victories in the Big Ten Conference. With six bowl victories on his record, he was well-known for fielding a competitive team almost every year. But Wisconsin started the 2022 season 2-3, which finally resulted in the choice to break up with Chryst.
After he left, the Badgers brought in Luke Fickell, a former head coach of Cincinnati, to take his place. Fickell played his first full season at Wisconsin, finishing 7-6 with a 5-4 Big Ten record and a ReliaQuest Bowl loss to LSU.
Changes to the Texas football staff are ongoing.
This offseason, Paul Chryst is the most recent assistant coach to depart from the Texas football program. Joe DeCamillis departed to take a position on South Carolina’s special teams. Payam Saadat left to take a position as Nevada’s associate head coach and interior defensive line coach. He worked with Jeff Choate, who went on to lead the Wolfpack as head coach.
Thus, this offseason has seen a lot of changes for the Texas football program. Paul Chryst is a former head coach at Wisconsin with an impressive resume that should appeal to many programs across the sport, but it is unclear where he will end up.
Still, when the Texas football program sets out on its new path to the SEC in 2024, they will need to fill a vacancy on the coaching staff.
