Paul Chryst, a former special assistant, departs Texas
During Packers OTAs, the former head coach of Pitt and Wisconsin was recently spotted without any Texas gear on.
On June 6, Inside Texas revealed that Paul Chryst, the head coach of Texas football, had fired his special assistant. In 2023, Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian hired Chryst as a special assistant to the head coach.
Paul Chryst is one of the three Texas football special assistants who has left the program.
As a special assistant, Chryst assisted the Longhorns in the previous season with personnel and offensive game planning. He was hired by Texas following his release from the Wisconsin Badgers during the 2022 season.
Chryst was the head coach of Wisconsin from 2015 until 2022, when he was hired by Texas last year. Prior to being appointed to the same position with the Badgers ahead of the 2015 campaign, he served as head coach of the Pitt Panthers from 2012 to 2014.
Chryst was recently spotted at Green Bay Packers off-season practices alongside Texas tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, according to a report from Inside Texas. Kyle Flood, the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for Texas, attended OTAs with Banks and Chryst last month as well.
The three special assistants Texas hired in 2023 for the head coach position have all gone on to take on new positions. Head coach Shane Beamer appointed former Texas S/T special assistant Joe DeCamillis to the position of South Carolina Gamecocks special teams coordinator.
Payam Saadat, a former defensive special assistant for Texas, left the Longhorns to become the defensive line coach and associate head coach of the Nevada Wolfpack alongside Jeff Choate. Early in the offseason, Nevada hired Choate, the former co-DC/LB coach of Texas, as their new head coach.
As Chryst was an offensive special assistant on staff in 2023, Texas had a fantastic year. With a record of 12-2 (9-1 Big 12) at the end of the 2023 season, the Longhorns made their first-ever appearance in the College Football Playoffs and won the Big 12 Championship in their last year before moving on to the SEC.
